Frequently we are asked to recommend books that a prospective law student may find beneficial in preparing for law school. We believe that the following books give students a sense of what law school is like, the history of American law, and why lawyers do the work they do.
Hamline ID and PIN
Hamline ID and PIN information is mailed shortly after admission letters are sent. If you have been admitted, you should have received your ID and PIN in an email. If you do not have your ID and PIN, please contact the Office of Admissions. The ID and PIN are used to enter Piperline, the University's secure website. Once you have logged on to Piperline, you will be able to complete the following:
- Online deposit payments using a credit card
- Access your Hamline University E-mail Account*
- Register for first year classes*
- Electronically sign the Financial Agreement and Disclosure form*
- Complete your immunization form* *=All of these items are mandatory
Deposit Payment
There are three ways to pay your tuition deposit in order to reserve your seat in the Fall 2010 entering class. Please check your admission letter for your deposit deadline.
- Online tuition deposit payments using a credit card can be made through Piperline. Only American Express, Discover, and MasterCard are accepted credit cards. You will need your Hamline ID and PIN to login. Your ID and PIN are sent via an email.
- Online E-Check option through Piperline.
- Check payments may be mailed to: Hamline University School of Law Office of Admissions, MS-D2001 1536 Hewitt Avenue St Paul, MN 55104-1237.
Accessing Hamline University E-mail Account
Hamline University provides e-mail accounts for degree-seeking and licensure students, and you will be required to use this official account for Hamline-related correspondence. Students who have paid their tuition deposits will be able to access their email accounts on August 1, 2010. You must use the University e-mail system to access e-mail correspondence from Hamline.
As of August 1, all University correspondence, including updates from Admissions, course materials, financial aid information, and other important updates, will be sent only to your Hamline e-mail address. Prior to August 1, your preferred e-mail address (Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) will be used. You are responsible for any message sent to your Hamline e-mail account, so please make it a habit to check it often and maintain your inbox, after August 1.

First Year Course Registration
The School of Law hopes to begin offering first year course registration in early May, and students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis, based on their preferences. When the date of registration is determined, all admitted students will be contacted via e-mail, and this site will be updated.

Transcript Requirement
An official, final copy of the transcript from your degree-granting institution must be received prior to the start of classes and your matriculation at Hamline University School of Law. The LSDAS transcript does not qualify. Please have your degree-granting institution send the transcript to: Hamline University School of Law Office of Admissions, MS-D2001 1536 Hewitt Avenue St Paul, MN 55104-1237.
Computer Requirement
A computer is required for enrollment to Hamline University School of Law. You can learn more about the 2009-2010 computer requirement from the links below; requirements for 2010-2011 will be provided as soon as they are available. Please note that you will need a laptop, whether it is your own or borrowed, to type an exam. The School of Law will not provide one for you.
- All students must complete the online financial disclosure agreement in Piperline.
The full-time tuition cost for 2010-11 is $33,022. The part-time tuition cost is $23,776. The School of Law awards merit based scholarships to those who qualify at the time of admission. If you plan to seek additional financial aid from Hamline, please complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Hamline University's FAFSA code is 002354. Financial aid letters are typically disbursed on a rolling basis after mid-March. Book Purchasing
First year students may purchase their books from the School of Law Bookstore after August 1, 2010. Bookstore hours will be posted here once they are available in late summer. Purchasing study aids and reading ahead is not recommended.
Residential Life and Housing Options
The Office of Residential Life offers School of Law students the opportunity to live on campus in the University's Graduate Apartments. Students are able to reserve a space in the Apartments by talking the following steps:

Submitting the $500.00 tuition deposit to the Office of Admissions, and then

Submitting the $100.00 housing deposit to the Office of Residential Life. The priority deadline is April 1, and the final deadline is May 1.
More information can be found on the Apartment application. Please keep in mind that there is limited space available, and Apartments often fill fast. If you have any questions, pleae contact the Office of Residential Life at 651-523-2061.
Students seeking off campus housing are encouraged to use websites such as www.rent.com or http://craigslist.minneapolis/apa/. Neighborhoods near Hamline University include: Como Park (www.comopark.com), Highland Park (http://www.highlanddistrictcouncil.org/), Macalaster-Groveland (www.macgrove.org), Hamline-Midway, Summit Avenue, and Grand Avenue (http://grandave.com/).

Immunization Forms and Health Insurance
Immunization forms must be filled out by all students, and can be completed online in Piperline using your Hamline ID and PIN. The Hamline ID and PIN were provided shortly after you were admitted.
All entering students are required to have health insurance. You will automatically be enrolled in the University's Health Insurance plan by Student Accounts, but you can choose to waive this enrollment if you have other coverage. If you would like further information about the University Health Insurance plan, please click here. Any questions about your immunization record, the form submission process, or the University's Health Insurance Policy can be directed to the Office of Counseling and Health Services at 651-523-2204.
Orientation is mandatory! Orientation dates for 2010 are as follows:
WEEKEND ORIENTATION (classes begin August 14) - for part-time weekend students
Saturday, August 7 & Sunday, August 8
Saturday, August 14 (this date only is optional)
WEEKDAY ORIENTATION (classes begin August 23) - for full-time weekday students
Wednesday, August 18 (this date only is optional)
Thursday, August 19 & Friday, August 20
More details regarding orientation will be posted as details are finalized.
A Legal Methods course will be held during orientation at no extra charge. This course will acquaint students with the basics--how law school and law classes operate; the distinctions and classifications that underlie sources of law; and the methodological tools necessary to begin to understand legal analysis, the judicial system, case analysis/synthesis, and statutory interpretation.
International Student Visa Process
Admitted, non-US citizens must provide proof of sufficient financial support, including an original bank letter and account statements demonstrating the ability to pay for expenses. Also, you must submit an affidavit of support if you are being sponsored financially by another party. The Office of Admission will provide you with information about financial documentation submission. Your information should then be submitted to the Office of Admissions as soon as possible after admission. Once the Office of Admissions receives sufficient financial documentation, you will be sent an I-20 form. This form will allow you to arrange a visa interview at your local U.S. embassy or consulate. Once you have your visa, you will be able to arrange travel to the United States. You are welcome to contact the Office of International Student Services for additional information about international student life at Hamline.
Checklist of Required Action Items
Admitted students need to complete the following action items in order to assure their place in the Fall 2009 entering class.
- Pay your tuition deposit
- Sign the financial disclosure agreement electronically through Piperline
- Complete the online immunization history form in Piperline
- Register for classes
- Request that your degree-granting institution submit a final transcript to Hamline as soon as it is available
- Fulfill the computer requirement
- Set-up and check your Hamline E-mail account regularly
- Attend Orientation.
