DR. EZEKIEL EMANUEL TO PROVIDE KEYNOTE ADDRESS
FOR HAMLINE'S ANNUAL LAW DEAN'S DINNER
Hamline University School of Law's annual Dean's Dinner will feature prominent oncologist and political scientist Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel. Dr Emanuel has a long record of experience at the top levels of policy, and provides a uniquely thoughtful perspective on the most difficult issues in health care today.
The Hamline Law Dean's Dinner is an annual celebration of the transforming force of new ideas and imagination in the law. By pairing thought leaders in business, education, and law with stimulating venues, the dinner strives to challenge its audience with the endless possibilities of what the legal profession could and should become. It is especially fitting that Dr. Emanuel has agreed to speak this year as the nation contemplates the dynamic and thorny future of health law and Hamline celebrates the continued success of its Health Law Institute, which is consistently ranked among the nation's top 20 health law programs.
From February 2009 to January 2011, Dr. Emanuel was a special advisor for health policy to the White House Office of Management and Budget. As one of the most prominent voices advising the White House about healthcare, he had a significant impact on federal healthcare budgets and the Affordable Care Act. Today, Dr. Emanuel holds a joint position at the Wharton School and the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he chairs the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy. He is a founding chair at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. Until 1997, he was an associate professor at the Harvard Medical School.
He is the author of Healthcare, Guaranteed: A Simple, Secure Solution for America. Dr. Emanuel analyzes the pervasive problems in American healthcare and lays out a comprehensive plan to solve them. It's a practical and highly readable book with concrete suggestions about how the government and private insurance can work together to offer coverage for every citizen.
His new book, Brothers Emanuel: A Memoir of an American Family, is a true American success story. Zeke is one of the world's leading oncologists; his brother Rahm is the mayor of Chicago and former White House Chief of Staff; and his youngest brother, Ari, is a Hollywood superagent. How did one family produce three such high-achieving kids? Zeke's answers will interest anyone who cares about how people rise to the top of their fields and achieve their full potential.
While health law will be a focus, Hamline Law has many other accomplishments to celebrate at this year's dinner. Fueled by outstanding graduate employment rates, Hamline Law jumped 25 places in U.S. News & World Report's "Best Law Schools" 2014 rankings, listing it within the first tier of law programs in the United States. The 25-place improvement was one of the largest jumps by a law school in the 2014 U.S. News rankings. And just last month, Hamline Law was named one of the top five "Best Value" private law schools in America by The National Jurist. Hamline was the only Minnesota law school to make the list, which takes into consideration tuition, debt, and cost of living and compare those numbers with pass rates for the bar exam and the percentage of employed graduates.
